Creating a resume to submit into a workplace can seem daunting with multiple questions looming over your head. What skills should I include? How long should my resume be? What needs to be included to give me the best opportunity at obtaining this job? The questions are endless which is why we're here to help. Here you will find tips on creating your resume as well as a sample resume.
In the creation of your resume there are several key components you must have to make your resume stand out to your interviewer:
-
Use an Appropriate Template and Format: One thing you have to remember when going in for an interview is that you are most likely going to be in a professional setting. You’re going to want to make your resume something that is legible and not confusing for your interviewer to review.
-
Make it Attractive but Professional: Presentation is key. You want your Resume to be eye-catching while at the same time being appropriate for the setting. This can be accomplished by using the perfect template. You can find many great resume creators online or you can create your own and make it unique!
-
Make Your Resume an Appropriate Length: While the length of your resume may vary depending on the job, a general length for your resume would be 1-2 front pages. Depending on the job, you may allow the resume to be a little longer or shorter based off of your knowledge of your proposed field, but typically you do not want the resume to exceed two pages.
-
Put Your Full Name: While this step seems a little obvious and even unnecessary, listing your full name on a resume adds a certain level of professionalism that could give you a boost when dealing with your interviewer. Your resume will be the first information they have on you, so you want to make sure it reflects on you well.
-
List Your Accomplishments: Your interviewer is going to want to know what you have done that makes you qualified for your potential job. Show them what you are capable of by listing some of your notable accomplishments in that field of study. Make sure that you list your accomplishments from newest to oldest.
-
Quantify Your Accomplishments: In other words, don’t make claims that you can’t back up. Show your interviewer specific examples of what you have done. Furthermore, you can follow it up with explaining what could have happened had you not completed that task. For example, you can backtrack by explaining, “If I had not accomplished A, then I would have never been able to get to B”. Always show your interviewer that you truly do have knowledge by avoiding vague claims.
-
List Your Skills: It’s always important to tell your interviewer about what you are good at or capable of. Let them know more about what you are capable of by listing skills that could pertain to your potential career. Furthermore, it could be beneficial to you to list skills that you would be able to use in your career that you could point out to your interviewer and allow you to gain an edge over potential competition.
-
Focus On What Makes You Qualified For That Job: You want to let your interviewer know why they should hire you for that specific job. Don’t list skills or qualifications that won’t assist you in your job of choice, but rather focus on areas that would draw your interviewer to wanting to get to know more about you and potentially hire you.
-
Don’t Appear Overqualified: While it is important to highlight your skills and accomplishments, you must know your target audience. Don’t walk into a room looking for a job in teaching with a resume designed to engineering! Make sure you list sources that aid you in getting the specific job you are going after!
